There is a point beyond which any bed or mattress is past its best and cannot be repaired. But equally some mattresses reach a stage where they start to lose some of their softness and support, but can still have their life extended.
What are the options
Waterproof Mattress Topper
Firstly, any mattress where the springs have actually failed, i.e. have broken, collapsed or pierced the mattress, cannot be repaired or restored. A bed in this condition needs to be replaced.
However, beds that are not quite as soft or spongy as they were, or beds that whilst generally level have become firm or hard can be remedied.
The solution to mattresses that are hard, overly firm or that have simply lost that "like new" feel is to supplement them with a mattress topper.
Restoring a bed with a mattress topper
A mattress topper is an additional layer of padding that you lay on top of an existing bed and that adds an extra tier of comfort, padding and support.
Most toppers come in regular bed sizes and they have elasticised corner ties that enable them to be securely fitted to any existing bed/mattress. Most are easily washable and some have removable covers.
What they do is provide a fresh new spongy topping layer to the old mattress, consequently revitalising it and making the bed behave the way that it did when it was new.
Mattress toppers come in a variety of different forms dependent on the filling material that is used to make them. The most popular toppers are produced from visco elastic memory foam which has important orthopaedic qualities, but other materials are also used.
Typical filling materials for mattress toppers include, memory foam, latex foam, pure wool, feathers and down and other low density synthetic foams.
These toppers also come in different thicknesses with the thicker options being the more expensive. Some of these toppers also have waterproof bottom layers that act as mattress protectors.
The most popular topper type in the current bed market is the memory foam version, but similar products made from latex foam are also good sellers. Both, it is claimed, will enhance sleep and comfort.
Other foam fillers are cheaper, but they do not offer the same recovery properties and they tend to be less effective at disguising the hardness of the existing sleeping surface.
Costs
A topper can cost anything from (£15) to 0 (£100) which is a considerable saving on buying a new bed. They also have the big advantage of being transferable from one bed to another. This means that you can use one on more than one bed, or take it with you if you have trouble sleeping in unfamiliar beds (e.g. hotels etc).
